Long Time Coming...

For many reasons, I've been out of the loop on updating my website lately. It's been an unbelievably busy spring this year.  I've been trying to keep up with the day job, yard work, chores, golf, music and photography.  Somewhere in there I find time to hang out with my wife...

I've also decided to join my local camera club: Saugeen Shores Camera Club.  I've only been to one meeting so far... but I think it is going to end up being inspiring to work with some local photographers.  They seem to be mostly landscape and nature oriented so far, but that is okay with me since that is where my heart truly resides in photography.  I would link to a website if I could...but they dont have one... (yet?). Wink

Lastly before some photography updates, I've made a change over on the website to link back to my Flickr images.  Two reasons.  The first being it will save on webspace hugely to host all my photos there.  Second, I should be able to save some time by only having to post photos in one spot.  The albums will update automatically on this site as I add more photos to the photoset on Flickr.  Huge Bonus!  That way photos stay current on this site as well as Flickr!

And remember, feedback and comments are always welcome.  Wishing everyone a happy summer until I update again.

In photography news, I've been testing out some strobe flashes I bought back in January.  I started by shooting some low key music photos of me posting.  These were pretty easy to set up.  I put the lights as high as I could and aimed them down towards me.  I shot: f/22 @ 1/200-1/250.  The lights were almost at 180.

I then moved onto some high key photos, which proved to be much harder to get the perfect image.  For the high key photos, I used a large mirror to reflect my subjects to some great success.  I had a white sheet as a backdrop and aimed one light from the left onto the sheet behind my subject.  The second light was to the right with a softbox at about 45 degrees.  I mostly shot: f/11-13 @ 1/250.

Mexico 2010

Trista and I finally enjoyed our hunnymoon vacation to the Mayan Riviera in Mexico.  We spent the last week in February in Mexico and we had such a great time at our 5 star resort.  I took about 400 pictures during our stay.

Winterlude 2010

Winterlude 2010

Normally I hibernate in the winter because I hate the cold (I live in Canada of all places...), but this winter Trista proposed a new idea.  To get me out of the house and "celebrate" winter (who would want to anyway), she said we should take a trek up to Ottawa and check out the yearly winter festival called Winterlude.  At first, I confused it with the winter festival in Montreal with the big snow man, Bonhomme de Neige.  Reluctantly, I agreed to go freeze my buns off, but I am happy I did.  I was absolutely awed by the ice sculptures created by artists around the world.  I hope my photography below can do their artwork justice.

The rest of the weekend we took in some of the sights in Ottawa, had a load of food, drank a lot of Guiness and had a lot of laughs with friends.  We skated on the canal one afternoon and I checked out an awesome record store in Rideu St where I bought some vinyl I had on my to buy list (Jeff Buckley - Grace, Portishead, U2 - Joshua Tree, Supertramp - Crisis What Crisis).  I was especially happy to find the Jeff Buckley album and I'm loving it.

Ingils Falls, Owen Sound

Rob @ Inglis Falls

I was out with a couple of friends from work the other day to take some photos of the frozen Inglis Falls located just out side of Owen Sound, Ontario.  We arrived just before dusk and it made life easy to get some really great flowing water photos of the fall.  The only downfall was the gloomy clouds overhead.

The picture to the left is of me as I was venturing out onto the side of a cliff as seen in the picture below.  Josh happened to snap the photo just as I took a step and was a bit nervous of falling through the cracks.  The cliff was snow covered and a bit frightening to walk on.  I'm sure my wife would have killed me for doing that if she was there.

The first picture below took a bit of effort to get.  I had to climb down the icy, snow covered rocks to the west of the falls.  Once I was down the ledge, I was in waste deep snow and had to walk over and under all sorts of branches and rocks.  I set up my tripod on a boulder just on the shore of the creek at the bottom of the falls.  Unfortunately, I was a bit too cold and snow covered to consider putting on my zoom lens.  So my shots were all wide angle from below.

The second photo is shot straight on from the west side of the falls on the ledge.  The last photo is from the bridge at the top of the falls.  I've taken all the photos either at f/22 or f/32 in order to get a long exposure time. My ISO was set around 200 and I was shooting on aperture priority.
